In this guide I have listed the various perfumes presented by Lancome from 1935-2003.
Lancome was established in 1935 by Armand Petitjean (1884 to 1982) in Chevilly Larue near Paris in 1935; named after a chateau in Touraine; born at Saint-Loup-sur-Semose; moved to Chile after attending college in Belgium; returned to Belgium at the outbreak of First World War and joined Coty after the war broke. Petitjean was the previous managing director of Coty, later returned to South America and runs the Coty agency there. In 1927, he returned to France and realized he had a nose for perfumery, and subsequently started his own business.
The first five perfumes were introduced at the 1935 Brussels exhibition. The perfume firm was awarded a prize and became a major company. Georges Delhomme, who worked for Coty from 1931-1935, became the artistic director for Lancome from 1935-1965 and was the creator for almost all of Lancome's presentations during the 1950s.
In 1946, Lancome's perfumes were introduced to America, by Mme. Elfi Cramer who represented Lancome and to introduce her scents. A newspaper article reads " The collection includes a nice variety of scents in different moods for different types of women.Mme. Cramer thinks its very important for a woman to wear a perfume of her type and she'd never suggest "Fleches", a grand manner perfume, seductive with the bittersweet of modern discord to a woman who is shy and sweet and retiring or young and naive. For her, there is "Bocages" a perfume of eternal spring, a young, fresh and curious scent. or she might be the "Qui Sait?" type, right for the fresh ardent perfume which is provocative and enchanting.
Perfumes are born in many strange places, MMe. Cramer reported. There's "Tropique" for example, a luxurious mixture of more than 70 scents, including tuberose, lilac, fading violets, cinnamon, cloves which really had its beginning down on a wharf in Pernambuco, Brazil. The smells of the tropics - the flowers, the spices being loaded onto ships, the human odors of the dock workers, were inspiration for this sultry scent.
The perfume "Kypre" is described in this way by its maker, The proud east comes west through French jasmine gardens close to the blue Mediterranean." And "Cuir" is a "sensitive, strange and subtle blend of soft fine leather with a melody of flowers."
The bottles and packages of this perfume family are works of art, too, and include Lalique glass bottles and flower and bird embroidered silk and leather boxes."
Later the company moved to 29 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré; Petitjean retired in 1963.
The rose is indelibly associated with Lancôme, given its founder Armand Petitjean’s strong passion for this flower. An avid rosarian, he cultivated roses in his garden in Ville d'Avray, outside of Paris and as a result, not only has the rose become an important symbolic representation of the house, but it has also found a central place in the Lancôme fragrances).
The Company was taken over by L'Oreal in 1964. In 2005, began to reissue some of their classic fragrances under the line La Collection Lancôme.
The following items have been discontinued by Lancome and are no longer available for sale on their website:
